BMD celebrates 45 years of construction excellence with an increased focus on sustainability

Leading integrated engineering, construction and urban development business, BMD proudly celebrates 45 years of delivering excellence and innovative solutions. Commemorating this milestone, BMD announced an expanded commitment to sustainability across all facets of its operations.

CEO Scott Power said BMD has always been committed to delivering the highest standards of quality to become Australia’s largest privately owned civil contractor.

“With over $2 billion of work in hand and more than 2000 employees, BMD is delivering infrastructure which connects communities across Australia, the Philippines and the United Kingdom,” Scott said.

“Our 45th anniversary is a testament to our dedication to excellence and our readiness to embrace new challenges.

“As BMD continues to grow, we embark on a new era with a concentrated focus on growth and sustainability, recognising our responsibility to minimise environmental impact while maximising the positive contributions and enduring legacies our projects make to communities.”

BMD’s commitment to local communities and economies is evident through annual contributions of over $1.5 million in partnerships, a Community Assistance Program which powers benefits for grassroots organisations and contributing $176 million to Indigenous suppliers and subcontractors since 2017.

The company’s approach to carbon reduction has included embedding new best practice technologies and solutions to measure its infrastructure projects. BMD works closely with clients and supply chain partners to reduce carbon emissions through the procurement of materials and construction operations. BMD has introduced the use of electric vehicles and charging stations alongside the use of renewable energy sources such as solar powered generators to power many of its site operations. BMD has also identified the potential for renewable diesel as a critical transition fuel option in the future and are undertaking a number of trials across its sites.

BMD has also strengthened its capability within the renewable energy sector by bringing sustainability and energy specialists into the organisation and bolstering industry partnerships.

The appointment of Cristina Munoz as BMD Constructions’ Operations Manager, Energy QLD/NT, coupled with the successful delivery of projects such as Hawkesdale Wind Farm in south-west Victoria and Crookwell II Windfarm in New South Wales has enabled BMD to accelerate its presence within the renewables sector.

In the United Kingdom, BMD Infrastructure Services is pursuing work within the nuclear sector, joining forces with the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) to revolutionise technology development and expand its presence and bolster the capability of its people.

Looking ahead, BMD’s Sustainability (EESG) Committee is currently focused on further defining and activating BMD’s approach to sustainability and implementing further innovation and technology.

BMD believes the integration of sustainability in its core business strategy will create a positive impact extending beyond projects and into local communities.
